Situated in the
Rudall River National Park, Camel
Rock finding is a collection of boulders on a low
hill surrounded by the dunes of the
Little Sandy desert. It is bordered on it's eastern side by a long claypan. It is reached by travelling a sandy track of good condition 32 kilometres north from Parnngurr (Cotton Creek) in then south east corner of the park. In travelling this track you will cross the sandy bottom of Cotton Creek several times and picturesque Mt Eva. Permission must be sought from the local community before accessing the area north of the community.
The rock can also be accessed by following the Fingoon Ranges Track east from the main Rudall Access Road near the Rudall
River Crossing.
I cannot for the life of me think of a reason to call this feature “Camel
Rock” other than the local dromedaries would no doubt wander past as they roam the region. We had lunch in the claypan that runs down the eastern side of the
hill in the shade of a gum tree. There was a suitable place for camping in a glade of gums at the southern tip of the pan tucked into the lee of the large dune bordering the pan on its eastern side. There is no water available.
