Named by William Rudall after Aubrey
Newman in 1896. He was on a surveying expedition from
Cue on his way to
Nullagine.
Aubrey
Newman was the leader, however he died of typhoid so Rudall took over. He marked a post AN164.
Mount
Newman stands at 1128m above sea level, and the hike can be challenging in
places. The trail is not defined and is very rough ground with rocky boulders, spinifex and is a steep sided mountain. However, if you make the climb you'll be rewarded by seeing the rich colours of the landscape and expansive
views.
Mount
Newman is in the Opthalmia Range about 20km west of the iron ore
mine near the town of
Newman, which is named after the Mount.
