In the Fortesque River. A very popular
camp spot with locals. Good
camping area surrounded by large gums and native
millstream palms. Access is by 150km good gravel road via
Python Pool then 30km track. The track is rough and crosses many small creeks. Not suitable for anything less than top quality off-road campers. The main
camping area is to the west with a
water hole some 800m long. It is advisable to
check with local authorities as to the river level as this area is often not accessible in the wet.
Great
camping area with many locations for 4-6 cars. more than 1500m of river bed available with good shade.
Extreme caution needed in summer to avoid dramas as all the good camping spots are on the opposite bank of the river to the road in. If the river comes up rapidly as it does quite regularly in the wet season getting back across the river can be a problem. Generally the river will go down again after 6-12 hrs, except in extended cyclonic rains when you wouldn't want to be there!
