The old Durack
Homestead is now a museum and is a great little side trip while at
Lake Argyle. There is a small fee to enter, they do have EFTPOS but carry cash as phone coverage is limited. Open to the public daily from April to September.
The
homestead was originally built in 1895 by the Durack family on Argyle Downs Station, now mostly submerged by the lake. Before the water rose too high the
homestead was relocated to its current position to preserve this magnificent dwelling. An interesting read of the pioneering history of the Kimberleys is the book " Kings in Grass Castles" by Mary Durack.
