This Victorian rural town, just 16 km south of Wangaratta, is best known as the location of the last stand against the Victorian Police of the infamous and famous Kelly gang of bush rangers. The story of the gang's skirmishes with the police go back to the 1880s and make interesting reading.
Glenrowan is now bypassed by the Hume Freeway which in former days ran through the middle of the town, so is easy to access if travelling that broad thoroughfare. It is a tourist town. Since it is an easy day's drive from
Melbourne it is a popular day drive. As
well as the Kelly Museum the town contains eating
places including a
bakery and pub.
