To the north, past
Hughenden, can be seen the elevated plateau of Sturgeon Province. This part of the upper Flinders region has an uplifted block of Mesozoic sandstones which were heavily dissected and in some instances capped with Tertiary basalt flows resulting from shield volcanoes and long lava flows filling valleys. The age of the basalts range from about 6 million years to 700,000 years.
