The Depot
Camp was established by Wright and remained occupied for 16 months. In January 1861 Wrights supply party left for
Cooper Creek but failed to meet up with Burke and Wills, He returned in July 1861. In 1862 Howitt used the
camp as a base to launch his search for Burke and Wills. It was also the place where Mahomet was attacked and killed by a camel. His grave site is located on the main road just north of Menindie. Although the signage says Burke and wills came here, they never actually did. Their party passed some 5 miled to the west.
