Karoonda is an important farming region for wheat and sheet in the heart of South Australia's Mallee.
Surveyed in 1910, Karoonda is Aboriginal for “winter
camp”. By 1914 the town had grown dramatically and became a thriving railway town by the 1920's.
Karoonda is an important farming region for wheat and sheep. The big Merino ram is a valued symbol of the town that sits near the railway yards to highlight the importance of sheep farming in the district. Also enjoy the Karoonda Pioneer Park. You can stroll around the park which is a fascinating collection of early mallee memorabillia including buildings, railway information, farming and machinery, signage and much more. You can also begin several bushwalks from here and we’re an RV friendly town.
Each night after dark a 20 minute lightshow is projected onto the silos. It runs as a loop and is on for a couple of hours.
Well worth a look.
