Mount Rouse was a volcano that erupted nearly 2 million years ago. This crater is not from an impact meteor like many other craters you may have seen in Australia.Fire-fountains of frothy lava built these overlapping scoria cones. But there were also masses of runny lava! It towed south along river valleys until it poured into the sea near
Port Fairy, 60 km away.
This was between about half a million and nearly 2 million years ago. So in Victoria's most recent phase of volcanic activity, Mt. Rouse may have been one of the first eruption points on these volcanic plain It also erupted over a long period.Take a walk to the
crater lake, a
natural amphitheatre with blocky lava as the seats.Or drive further up, and walk up to
the summit for
views of Mt. Napier and Mt: Eccles.
