This big
sinkhole formed when part of a
cave roof fell in. At the far end you can see into the remaining part of the
cave. This is part of a large tube that fed hot lava beneath a crust to the far end of the valley 20 km to the West. Large tubes such as this form when a roof solidifies over a large lava river. Only parts of the tube drained out at the end of the eruption to leave open caves. For example, beneath you at this end of the
sinkhole, the
cave does not continue. There is no easy access and ropes would be required.
