Gold was discovered in this area in 1873 which later led to the establishment of the
Waukaringa township. The town was abandoned in the 1950's.
Ruins of only a few buildings remain, principally the former
Waukaringa Hotel.
Visitors can locate the nearby goldfields. A stone
chimney from the Alma and Victoria
mine is still visible. There were 4 mines in the area: Alma & Victoria, Alma Extended, West
Waukaringa and Balaclava.
