The 9 mile marsh probation station was a self-contained settlement, consisting of barracks, storehouses, mess rooms, Stone, breaking sheds and various outhouses. It was situated on the slope immediately before you and the foundations can still be clearly seen.The non-mile marsh probation station was established here in 1841, and in the following year 60 prisoners were housed on this site the number Rose to 300 before the station was disbanded in 1845, as a result of the British government insistence that convict labour be paid for by the colonial authorities. After 1848, the only probation stations left were on Tasman Peninsula and Maria Ireland.The Crown lands were eventually sold in the mosh area is now used mainly for cattle grazing the corner allotment on which this Tasmanian Trail
