The area now known as
American River was first visited by Europeans in 1802 when Matthew Flinders landed to survey this part of
Kangaroo Island. In 1803, a group of American sealers camped for four months in the area. They arrived on the brig Union and built their own 35 ton schooner "Independence" from local timber. The town takes its name from this time.
The main village –
American River – sits on a hillside surrounded by bush land and boasting spectacular
views of the cove and mainland Australia. The channel houses
Kangaroo Island's most protected harbour where numerous yachts, sailboats and fishing boats dock. The outer bay offers some superb sailing and fishing, while the 2.5 mile long Island Beach is a great place for swimming and sunbaking.
Its natural surroundings and lack of crowds make it a haven for wildlife and birdwatching. At night the town comes alive with nocturnal animals such as wallabies and possums. The town and surrounds are dotted with self guided walking trails that are the perfect setting for observing the prolific birdlife and native flora including Tammar Wallabies and Brush-tailed Possums.
Organised nocturnal tours are available, incorporating Little Penguins at
Penneshaw.
American River also has a strong oyster industry.
