Port Gibbon is a small locality that began as a town surveyed in 1916. It operated as a commercial facility until 1950 and as of 2005, had been demolished with the exception of a section on
the beach which is used as a shelter. Boundaries for the locality were created in 1998 and include both the Port Gibbon
shack site and the Government Town of Port Gibbon.
On the south side of
The Knob is a relatively straight 3 km long beach that runs down toward a protruding
bluff. The Port Gibbon road runs along the back of
the beach with several beaches, then
bluff top car parks. On the south side of
the bluff, the Port Gibbon beach continues on for another 1.4 km to the port and small jetty. This beach is backed by 10 m high red bluffs composed of Pleistocene alluvium, with the small port settlement sitting on the bluffs overlooking the relatively sheltered beach, which is often covered with seagrass
debris.
An RV park at this site offers some basic facilities but no power, and no showers for a small fee. However, you are also permitted to select a site if you prefer along
the beach foreshore stretching from
Gibbon Point and
The Knob. Be sure to take a short drive and see the resident Bull seal and his females. Great fishing 100m from
camp area. King George whiting in area. No power but water and drop
toilets. There is a bush shower cubicle if you have water bags. Fantastic happy hour section. This area is very
well maintained and clean.
The Port Gibbon locality is populated by
shacks only and offers no local shops for replenishing supplies.
