This self-guided walk starts in
the Gorge Day Visitor Area opposite the Mt Buffalo Chalet and leads to many spectacular
lookout points. Interpretative signs describe the area’s history and beauty through
the eyes of local pioneer, Guide Alice. Start opposite the Chalet and enjoy waterfalls and
views.
THE GORGE has been an attraction for tourists since the 1850s.
Until 1908 there were no roads to the Buffalo plateau and tourists reached this point with the aid of a guide.
The most famous of these was Alice Manfield (Guide Alice), who became legendary for her knowledge of the plateau and its plants, animals and beauty spots.
