This is the start of the 85km one-way multiday Southcoast Track of which a day hike can be done out and back to view
South Cape Bay. The walk from here to
South Cape Bay is 8km and quite rough going over tree roots and rocks in the first few kms and then follows boardwalk planks until reaching the coast. The hike is
well shaded for the most part through densely tree sheltered areas of ferns. There is an open valley in the centre of the hike that is easy going and flat along plank boards. When reaching the coast youll come to the top of rubbly black cliffs with great
views. If its low tide, it is
well worth venturing down
the steps to
the beach where there are many
rock pools. The Southcoast Track continues along this beach to the right (west) and then at the creek is a staircase that leads to a pit
toilet and the first
campground for hikers. Great
views from the top of this staircase. When you first reach the bay the headland to the east (left) is
South East Cape - the most southern part of Australia. At this point you ate now closer to Antarctica than you are to
Cape York (the most northerly part of Australia in Qld).
