Opened in 2005 after a 2 year construction using RCC or roller compacted concrete. The impoundment created by the
dam is called Lake Paradise and is used mainly for irrigation purposes. The
dam is named for the ghost town of Paradise, which is now under water following construction.
In 2019, concerns about the structural stability of the
dam resulted in the water levels being lowered. Construction started in May 2020 to lower the
dam wall height by 5 metres. And in 2024 the
dam is deemed unsafe and a new $1.2 billion
dam wall is to be built, still using RCC but with triple the cement content.
Recreational use has been slightly modified as a result of water lowering however it is still popular with visitors who can still enjoy kayaking, SUP and fishing, however large boating is no longer practical.
