Penong is a very small settlement located along the Eyre Highway and is situated approximately mid-way between
Ceduna and
Nundroo Roadhouse. Most notable as the many windmills scattered around the area.
The picturesque massing of windmills on the eastern entry to Penong, locally known as 'Windmill Flat', has developed over many years in order for the town to access one of the small underground basins that is close to the township. Each household obtains their
water supply using their own windmill and the abundant winds to pump from the underground basins to their homes. The supplies were also used for water supplies for stock. The
water supply for the Penong township is now also carted by road tanker from
Ceduna to top up local supplies at a cost to consumers and subsidised by the South Australian Government. There are 26 windmills on windmill flat. The residents of Penong and districts still rely on rainfall as their main source of water.
Facilities in Penong include a 24/7
Caltex Roadhouse with fast food available 6am-10pm, and a public phone. Opposite the
Caltex on the corner of Saunders Street, is the Penong Hotel with beer garden and accommodation. The Penong Landromat and the Penong
General Store &
Post Office are all on Saunders Street.
The
Penong Caravan Park is located on Stiggants Roads (follow West Ter north of the highway).
Hole 3 of the Nullarbor Links ("Windmills") is at Penong Golf Course located north of the highway. This hole is Par 4 - 260m.
Just south of Penong, you'll find
Cactus Beach, which is a widely renowned surfing spot with 1 right hand and 2 left hand breaks.
