This huge mound was formed by the now extinct mound spring.
Hamilton Hill is one of the oldest springs which were from the Pleistocene era, which lasted from about 2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago. This size of this mound gives some indication of what the flow would have been like during a time when the Great Artesian Basin had a much higher hydrostatic head than at present. Since
European settlement, many bores have been sunk, resulting in reduced aquifer pressure.
As with the within
the Bubbler and
Blanche Cup, this mound is located within the Wamba Kadarbu Mount Springs Conservation Park just off the
Oodnadatta Track.
