Popular but rarely busy, West Head Beach is the easiest beach to get to at West Head – although it still requires a short and steep bushwalk to reach. There’s shaded areas at the rocky headlands at both ends of
the beach.
The beach is on
Pittwater and opposite the Barrenjoey Peninsula, and has low swell – just enough to make it difficult to land a boat, which helps to keep
the beach fairly quiet. Low tide is best as more of the sandy beach is exposed, but swimming is possible at any time and there are less submerged rocks. At high tide there are a few submerged rocks along
the beach. West Head Beach is reached via a bushwalking track that descends from the
carpark at the
West Head Lookout, which is at the end of West Head Road. It’s a bit steep in a few
places and there are a few stairs, but it’s suitable for children. The track crosses a creek just before the final set of steps down to
the beach. If you have time, continue to Resolute Beach and do the 4km Resolute Loop Trail – one of the best bushwalks at West Head..
