Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the 23 wildlife sanctuaries owned and managed by the Australia Wildlife Conservancy. The bird fauna at
Bowra is prolific (>200 species) and includes nine threatened species. In additional 20 mammal species have been identified, over 60 species of reptiles, and a total of 300 species of native vertebrate animals.
The Australia Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) works in collaboration with Birds Queensland at
Bowra.
Bowra is open to bird watching visitors from the end of March to October each year. The visitor program is managed by Birds Queensland volunteer caretakers who reside at
Bowra on a rotational basis. Visitors are asked to contribute to the "Bird Call" held day. Fixed route survey forms are available for those who wish to assist in bird monitoring.
Visitors can choose to stay in one of two accommodation structures (shearers quarters or cottage) or
camp. Power is provided for campers and caravanners, however be aware that this only low-power is available which is insufficient to run heaters, airconditioners etc. Bookings essential with costs per person per day at time of writing (Aug '14):
Cottage $47, Quarters $37, Camping $12, Caravans $12. Power forvans $5 per day. Please also note that there are no facilities to accept card payment so the only ways to pay are by cash, cheque or to pre-pay by direct transfer.
Maps and other information on getting about the property and suggested
places to look for birds are supplied to all visitors.
ACCESS: All roads on the property are dirt and can be dusty in dry conditions and very muddy and at times impassable when wet. When it’s wet all vehicles are banned from the roads to prevent damage. 4WD vehicles have no difficulties getting about in dry times and most roads are accessible to normal vehicles although a few spots may cause a problem.
