Wreck point is named for the wreck of the 62 ton transport schooner Selina which was found waterlogged and washed ashore near the point in October 1848. She was found by Captain Roach of the cutter Will-o’-the-Wisp.
The Selina was launched in
Brisbane in 1847 after being built for Captain Deloitte of
Sydney. She had taken on board a load of logs destined for
Sydney at Pine River just north of
Brisbane, but never arrived in
Sydney. Instead, 15 months later, she was found near what is now Wreck Point.
Her crew had been lost for reasons unknown and she drifted at sea before eventually making landfall. Her cargo was intact but the main mast and sails were missing. Holes in the deck are thought to have been cut for bailing water from the hold.
In November 1848 the schooner Breeze was sent from
Sydney to salvage the Selina. She was re floated and sailed to Keppel Bay but more resources were needed to to complete the salvage. Breeze sailed for
Sydney but never returned, leaving one man to look after the pumps. His rations became exhausted and so did he, but he continued to man the pumps for 6 weeks.
The crewman Owens finally abandoned Selina and she sank in Keppel Bay. Later, Owens was rescued by Secret under captain Jackson which had been sent to retrieve him.
