Finch Hatton is a rural town 60 km west of Mackay.
The locality was originally known as Hatton, named after Harold and Henry Finch-Hatton, local land owners and gold miners. Harold Finch-Hatton was also the author of a popular travel book, Advance Australia (1885), with several pages on his mining and pastoral adventures. Because of the confusion with Hatton Vale, south Queensland, the full Finch Hatton surname was adopted in 1906 for the small township and railway station.
When milling ceased the town's only support came from tourism in the
Eungella national park, which includes the
Finch Hatton gorge - a must-see attraction. Adventure opportunities at Finch Hatton are plentiful, with the opportunity to scuba dive in the rainforest waters with platypus, or to zip-line through the tree-top canopy. See separate listing for Forest Flying.
The town of Finch Hatton has a
general store, the
Criterion Hotel, hardware store, primary school, a museum in the former railway station, ambulance and fire station. No caravan park, however the
showgrounds offer camping for up to 48 hours. (See separate listing for Pioneer Valley
Showgrounds).
The Pioneer Valley Agricultural Show is held annually at the
showgrounds.
