The town of Halifax is small with a
population of 462. Halifax has a number of
heritage-listed sites, including Macrossan Street: Row of Street Trees. There is a town hall, churches and regular community markets.
There are 2 very small primary schools with less than 50 students but no secondary school. Hinchinbrook Shire Council operates a library service at Halifax. The library and museum are located on Macrossan Street but are not open daily.

HISTORY:
August Anderssen, a blacksmith, purchased the land in 1880 prior to the area becoming turned into sugar plantations. after which time the land was turned into sugar plantations. Herbert River Provisional School opened on 24 September 1883.
