South Johnstone is 10 Klm S.S.E of
Innisfail and is a major Sugar and Banana growing area.
South Johnstone mill was built in 1915 and Government controlled until 1927 when it was acquired by the district’s farmers. It became an unlisted public company in 1987.
South Johnstone’s traditional mill area is located in Johnstone Shire, which is adequately serviced by a cane railway network. It has two development areas, located to the south of
Tully in
Cardwell, and on the
Atherton Tablelands, mainly in
Atherton Shire. South Johnstone has followed strategies similar to the
Mossman and
Mourilyan mills to boost throughput.
Most of the road haulage to the mill is by B-double vehicles. Cane is collected from pads, constructed on farms by the mill or farmers. Due to financial difficulties in recent seasons some special arrangements were put in place with
Tully mill to reduce transport costs during the downturn in world sugar prices. The recent change in ownership of this mill might lead to changes in transport arrangements.
