The town of Kowanyama is a town on the Gulf of Carpentaria side of
Cape York in North Queensland. There are many a number of Aboriginal groups who live here including the Kokoberra, Kokominjena and the Kunjen. The name ‘Kowanyama’ which means ‘the place of many waters’, is situated on the banks of Magnificent Creek. There are approximately 1200 people who live in this community and it’s one of the largest communities on the
Cape York Peninsula.
Kowanyama has a small
supermarket that sells fresh foods, packaged and frozen foods, and hardware items. There is also a coffee
shop and a guesthouse for accommodation. The Kowanyama Canteen operates Monday to Friday; from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm and alcohol is only served in the form of light beer.
Road trains from
Cairns service the town of Kowanyama weekly in the dry season. During the wet monsoon season which may range from November to April, the area can be subject to flooding. This may isolate the community by road and the only way to bring in supplies is by aircraft.
