Coen, like so many Australian towns, owes its settlement to a gold rush. Now
home to about 400 people, it is second in size on
Cape York to
Weipa. It offers basic
services, with a
general store, mechanical repairs, fuel and the somewhat famous Exchange Hotel often referred to as the Sexchange Hotel. Camping is available at the hotel and at The Bend camping ground a couple of kilometres to the north.
It has a National Parks and Wildlife Service office the phone number of which is (07) 4060 1137 and historical relics in and surrounding the town.
