The monument commemorates pioneer settler
John Dunn who was killed by Aborigines in 1880. The memorial was erected by the Phillips Road Board to commemorate the centenary year of Western Australia and was unveiled by Mrs Moir, widow of the late William Moir and the first European women to visit the area, on the December 20th 1929.
John Dunn was killed by local Aboriginals in 1880. He had attacked and assaulted a
young Noongar girl, and was subsequently killed – according to the Noongar lore of payback – by Yandawulla Dibbs and a group of local Noongar men.
