If you're near
Lyndhurst, spend a couple of hours at Talc Alf's. Not only will you enjoy his art (carvings) the highlight is talking to this eccentric and informative man. For your time you will be rewarded with stories on how the country should be run and how your name was derived amongst other quirks and fun facts.
Born in Baarn, Holland in 1945, Alf migrated at a
young age to Western Australia where he was brought up on a dairy
farm. In 1960 he left the comforts of
home to explore Australia. As a geologist's field assistant, he discovered talc and found it perfect for his hobby, sculpture. He now looked for the best talc deposit in Australia. This he found at Mount Fitton in the northern
Flinders Ranges. Excellent story teller and works of art in soapstone. TALC ALF is a very interesting man to have a chat with and his carvings are just wonderful. His place is not a palace but it's his
home and not far out of the town of
LYNDHURST, S.A.
