Looking down the gorge today you will see the remains of the 1887 Bakers Creek Gold Mine, a smelter chimney and mine dump. A twenty head crushing plant was installed to extract ore and the mine proved to be very profitable in its early stages. The early miners gained access to the mine via Hillgrove by constructing a tramway which was completed in 1889.
