Rathdowney lies 96klms south of
Brisbane and 32klms south of
Beaudesert. Rathdowney is a small township offering forests and rolling hills. The town still retains much of its origins in timbering and dairy farming. You can learn about the history of this area at the
Visitor Information Centre and Historical Museum.
A Tramway (a small railway line like the cane trains) was opened to Rathdowney in 1911. This service was important to the district as it not only enabled the delivery of timber and cream from the area but was also used as a passenger service. The advent of the motor vehicle eventually caused the downturn in tramway use and in 1944 the Tramway was closed.
