This little
bridge was built in 1843 as part of the improvement of the road to Tasmania's east coast and to link the growing towns of
Swansea and Little Swanpool. It takes its name from the construction of the walls that have stone spikes protruding along the full length on both sides of the road. It was convict built and is located about 7.5 km south of
Swansea. The “spikes” that give the
bridge its name are said to have been put in place by to prevent passing cows from fall off the edge.
The
bridge has been bypassed by a newer road and now provides access to a
farm. It is very near the current road and hard to miss as you pass by.
