These gardens offer caravan and camping sites and some accommodation in station buildings, near by.
Toilets, which include showers, are located a short walk away from the
camping area, at the gallery and picnic facility, near the day visitor car park. The site will be potentially attractive to anyone with an interest in Australian native trees and shrubs.
A brief history of
the gardens. In the early 1940s Mr David
Gordon and his wife Dorothy began a collection of Australian native vegetation on part of his sheep station. He used some of the funds from good wool prices to send people around Australia collecting seeds to be germinated and planted on the property. When complete
the gardens covered 132 hectares and was fenced and irrigated. A dirt road almost 4 km long allows a leisurely drive among the collection.
Dorothy
Gordon was a gifted artist, who specialised in water colours of Australian native flowers. The gallery on the site contains a substantial number of her works of art. An extensive covered
picnic area and
toilets completes the facilities available to visitors, in addition to basic camping facilities.
The gardens are now controlled by an independent board of directors and there is an on sight volunteer caretaker. Drought and the passage of time have left their mark but
the gardens remain an excellent collection in a natural Australian bush environment.
