Site of the historic
Yea station on the
Tallarook-
Mansfield line, now part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
The first train arrived in
Yea from
Tallarook on Tuesday, 20 November 1883.
It was a grand occasion for the local community, with some 500 people coming out to meet and welcome the Minister of Railways, Mr Gillies, and his party.
Bunting decorated the station and leading businesses, and the
Yea Shire Council provided a banquet.
Minister Gillies commented on the large area of productive arable land he had seen along the railway route and predicted it was only a matter of time before it was highly cultivated and adding to the general wealth of the community. The station was the end point of the line until it was extended in stages from 1889, reaching
Mansfield in 1891.
