The
Gordon River is one of several that run through the
Franklin-
Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and is one of Tasmania's wild treasures. It is one of the pristine rivers that carve deep gorges into the park . It is located at the end of
Gordon River Road, way after you pass
Mount Field National Park and a few kilometres past
Strathgordon.
The
dam was completed back in 1974 and is the tallest
dam (140 metres) in Tasmania. It backs up beside the road as you reach
Strathgordon. Lake Pedder is visible on the other side of the road. Pedder feeds water into the
Gordon Dam to make joint use of the generation facilities on the shore of that lake.
The massive the concrete wall features an arch both horizontally and vertically. The top is higher than
Sydney Harbour Bridge. The
Gordon and Pedder dams combined hold multiples of the volume of
Sydney Harbour.
