1.5 billion year old
sandstone rock has been weathered and eroded into prominent pillars, many with a tilt. Layers in
the rock vary in hardness and the softer layers crumble more quickly. Layers which retain more water allow black algae to grow, giving some of the pillars a striped effect. These geological and biological forces have combined over time to produce this magnificent landscape.
