For thousands of years (and still continuing today) lies this active Ochre Pit site used for ceremonial purposes. The vivid colours of red, yellow, and white make an incredible backdrop to the natural surrounds. It is an easy and pleasant respite for the visitor before rejoining the road to the next
point of interest.
Historical use of ochre: Weapons were painted with ochre to increase the success of hunting and to protect the wooden weapons from termites. Red ochre was mixed into an ointment to relieve decongestion, and white ochre used as a magical charm.
