Karolin
Well was not mentioned at all in Hunt's diaries and Hunt was not in WA in 1860.
But the original author has good reason to state it is a
Hunt well - there is a Bicentennial
plaque at Karolin
Well saying it is a
Hunt well and with a quote from his diary.
BUT the
plaque has the spelling Carolling Rocks. That is definitely a
Hunt well and the quote is from his time there. Carolling
Rock is some distance away - between Karalee
Dam and the Gt Eastern Hwy. It is not helped by Hunt's erratic spelling which does use a 'K' at times.
So, the
plaque is (in my view) in the wrong place probably from a simple verbal confusion and that the correct Carolling
Rock name is now not used while
Karolin Rock is.
There are definitely several early tanks and wells at
Karolin Rock. In 1893 Gus Luck records stopping there on his first night out of
Southern Cross with a camel team taking supplies to the Mt Jackson fields.
