Prince Alfred
Mine Site, abandoned copper
mine.
The copper
mine was discovered in 1866 and abandoned in 1907. During this time, 3 different companies worked the
mine, with 12,000 tons produced in its final 17 years. Many of the nearby drought stricken farmers at Belton found employment at the
mine. The
mine was temporarily revived in the late 1960s by a small group of men but production did not last long enough to support ongoing operations.
If you visit today, you will see many interesting dwellings with stone arches, the main building and tall
chimney and some just foundations. Whilst in
ruins, the quality of the buildings can be seen.
