One of the major locks on the Murray
Robinvale Weir Construction 1932-36. The weir
pool stretches back 60 kilometres to Meilman East. In 1987 the original timber barricades were replaced with steel and gates were added, and the operation changed from a manual to hydraulic one.
The management of Lock 15 and the weir includes maintaining the daily level of
the pool at a constant 47.6 metres above sea level (give or take 10 centimetres allowing for such factors as evaporation). This remains a local manual operation. Originally the lock and weir was constructed for navigation of river cargo, but nowadays its main importance is for irrigation, environment and
recreation.
The Fish Ladder at
Robinvale is one of the
places for the monitoring of fish. The Fisheries Dept takes its breeding stock of silver perch, perch, and Murray cod from only two
places.
Robinvale is one of these, because of the healthy size of the fish stock here. The staff monitors the fish stocking levels using radio trackers which trigger a data logger as the tagged fish find their way through the Denil Fish Way. This still experimental fishway 2008 replaced an ineffective 1930s one that was far too steep. The goal is to allow fish to go from the sea to the Hume
Dam.
