This 292,008 hectare National Park is owned by the Jawoyn Aboriginal people and jointly managed with the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory. Some of the park’s features include spectacular dissected
sandstone country, broad valleys and numerous, significant cultural sites. The deep Nitmiluk
Gorge carved through ancient
sandstone by the
Katherine River is the central attraction of the area, and creates a wonderful ‘natural playground’ for many activities.
ACCESS
The park’s main entrance is located 30 kilometres northeast of
Katherine via a sealed road. Keep a watch out for the many Wallabies – a small Kangaroo – that are inquisitive of visitors and haven’t yet learned the road rules.
Katherine is approximately 320 kilometres southeast of the Northern Territory’s capital,
Darwin.
WHEN TO VISIT
The most comfortable time to visit Nitmiluk National Park is from May to September. During the wet season flooding of the
Katherine River may restrict the range of activities available and in some cases prevent access to the park.
ABOUT NITMILUK NATIONAL PARK
For thousands of years Nitmiluk has been the foundation of the Jawoyn Aboriginal people, providing an abundance of water and food, a gallery of art and artefacts and the today it’s a living testament of ancient Aboriginal culture.
Many visitors to the Northern Territory choose to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and culture of Nitmiluk
Gorge and National Park with an extended stay in the region or at the Nitmiluk Caravan and Camping grounds, while other with pressing travel schedules have only the time to touch the surface of this ancient landscape.
Day visitors are welcome to open the first pages of this remarkable record of Aboriginal culture, geological wonder and European history. From the Nitmiluk
Visitors Centre you can explore the closer points of interest at the display centre and museum, take an easy walk, hire a canoe or enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the gorges on a Nitmiluk cruise. We recommend the full day cruise that includes morning and afternoon tea and a great Aussie Barbecue.
Don’t miss seeing the range of locally produced art and artefacts, souvenirs and clothing. Enjoy a meal from the Restaurant where the menu reflects the best of local produce and flavours.
