4WD track. Closed 1 Dec to 15 March. Speed limit 40kmh.
This is PAR 13 as per:
https://www.dit.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads/outback_road_warnings/special_noticesUnfortunately, both the
Halligan Bay Track and the
Level Post Bay Track have been closed with uncertainly about their reopening. Please
check the Desert Parks Bulletin for further updates.
The first 30 km is wider and easy driving. Last 30 km crosses various breakaways with a few gentle slopes and curves. Many people do the return trip from
William Creek in a day - perhaps a bit of a rush. Relax more by camping at the bay and take in sunset, sunrise and the glory of the heavens. Bookings required - no self registration.
The track to
Halligan Bay is marked 4WD mainly because of large bulldust potholes, soft sand, claypans and washouts.Staying below 40kmh will assist in braking at unexpected washouts. After 40km there is a
Y junction at the ugliest section of Lake Eyre you'll see. As you begin the final 10km out to
Halligan Bay you leave the stark black scenery behind and suddenly you are surrounded in soft pastels and salmon coloured sand. The sand is soft so consider deflating your tyres if you get stuck. (Don't become a statistic out here. People have died because they weren't prepared).
