Hinze
Dam provides a safe
drinking water supply to the people of the
Gold Coast. It also provides flood mitigation to homes
downstream of the
dam. The water from Hinze
Dam is treated to produce
drinking water and follows the water journey of source, store and supply
Hinze
Dam is located 5km west of Nerang on the
Gold Coast. The
dam is restricted to electric powered vessels, sail craft and paddle craft only. Fishing is permitted along the shoreline at the Eastern
boat ramp, Western
boat ramp and paddle craft launch point and from restricted vessels on the
dam.
There is no camping at the
dam. The facilities at the
dam include
toilets, free barbeques, picnic tables, shelters, playground and the Hinze
Dam Visitor Centre with educational displays and a cafe.
Dogs on leashes are permitted in Picnic Parkland and Pocket Park. There are walking and mountain bike trails around the
dam including the Peter Hallinan Mountain Bike Precinct.
NOTE: Australian bass (fish) and water in a number of dams in South-East Queensland were tested for mercury in 2018. Bass in Hinze
Dam on the
Gold Coast were found to have elevated levels of mercury. Based on the results, fish from Hinze
Dam should not be consumed.
Swimming is not permitted.
There are four picnic and barbecue areas with nearby playgrounds for the kids and onlookers, plus a state-of-the-art educational interpretive centre perched above the parklands and lake.
Open Times
Public Holiday: The gates at Hinze
Dam are open every day, from 6am to 6pm. The
Visitor Information Centre is open 8.30am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday and public holidays. The Centre is closed Good Friday, Anzac Day and Christmas
