Henry
Ross Lookout is located near the
Kuranda Range road's highest point, at an altitude of 430 metres (1,400 ft), and is named after the foreman in charge of building the road in 1939.
Due to public demand and its strategic importance during WWII, the
Kuranda Range Road was constructed as an alternative to the much longer Gillies Highway which ascends the mountains from behind
Gordonvale, south of
Cairns.
The very popular Henry
Ross Lookout allows panoramic
views of the
Cairns and Northern Beaches district, with a backdrop of Trinity Bay and the Coral Sea in the distance.
Excellent
parking facilities are provided at the
lookout for those who want to take in the
views, however, due to heavy traffic it is easiest and safest to stop in during the return trip from
Kuranda.
