The Warri
Gate is an outback icon in itself. Positioned on the border of NSW and QLD the
gate provides travellers with access through a fence, known as the Dog (
Dingo Fence) built in in the 1880s designed to restrict wild dogs/dingoes from penetrating the sheep flocks of southern Qld. It is actually the longest fence in the world, stretching over 5,600km. The Queensland section is known as the Great Barrier Fence (or Wild Dog Barrier Fence 11) and is 2,500km long. It joins the Queensland border fence, which stretches for 394 km to the west along the border with New South Wales, into the Strzelecki Desert.
The
Dingo fence has been partly successful with a reduction of sheep loses to predators since its inception. Holes in the fences have allowed
dingo offspring to pass through, which has increased pasture competition from rabbits and kangaroos.
The
gate is reached along roads that are wide, flat and easy driving. You will observe lots of roos, cattle, and red dust to reach this point. Please close the
gate after you pass through.
