Jacobs Ladder is a
well-known location for the fitness junkies of
Perth. It's a flight of 242 concrete steps scaling the heights of Mt Eliza between lower
Cliff Street off Mounts Bay Road to upper
Cliff Street. During the "peak hours" of early morning, lunchtime and early evening, it is packed full of runners using it for a high intensity work out.
Of course there are other reasons for using
Jacobs Ladder - most notably to take in the
views from the top looking back over the Swan River. Upper
Cliff Street is a millionaire's row of quality real estate that takes advantage of it maybe the best
views Perth has to offer.
The staircase got it's name from the biblical reference to Jacob's Ladder that is described in the book of Genesis that reaches from Earth all the way to
Heaven.
Jacobs Ladder has been a landmark for many years in
Perth and was originally constructed in 1909 of Jarrah by Joseph Huck and Sons. The original construction had no landings as it does now. During the 50's it fell into disrepair and was closed by the
Perth City Council in the interest of public health & safety in 1961. It was then rebuilt of concrete with landings and a viewing platform a few years later.
