Information

Heat from the explosion has fused the sand grains into a glassy mineral named Trinitite. This was first observed at the Trinity test site in New Mexico USA after the July 1945 first ever test of an atom bomb. Hence the minerals name. The desert sands are red/orange due to the quartz grains being coated on the outside with impure iron oxides i.e. rust. The bomb blast melts the lot, mixing iron with the silica of the quartz and turning it green similarly to making green wine bottles.
A sample of Trinitite from this Breakaway site has been tested at 4 times the level of the background radiation.
