Burke and Wills Roadhouse is a welcome sight and a good spot to stop. It’s a long way between facilities in this neck of the woods!
The roadhouse, situated at The Threeways, is just as welcome for travellers coming from
Julia Creek or
Burketown. It’s actually right on the route taken by the intrepid
explorers Burke and Wills, hence its name. If you’re in a hurry, you can drop in to fuel up, grab a drink and order takeaways.
If you like a more relaxed stopover, have a meal at the licensed roadhouse, park your van or book into the accommodation.
The Burke and Wills is open from about 5.30am until around midnight seven days a week. The restaurant is open until 9.00pm, but even if you arrive later the staff will organise a snack or a fresh sandwich. The bar is open until midnight. While you’re there, browse through the souvenirs.
From the Threeways, you can turn off the highway and head for
Gregory Downs for a bit of fishing or to go on to
Lawn Hill at the Boodjamulla (
Lawn Hill) National Park for a couple of days of nature appreciation. Conventional vehicles can traverse these roads in good weather.
If you’re staying on the
Matilda Way, the next stop is
Normanton.
