Portable Toilets and Dump Points

G'day all, at the risk of opening a rather large debate I'm after some thoughts on porta potties, are they easy to use and maintain, are they prone to leakage when travelling over rough roads, what are the best brands? A few years ago as my body continued to age and my flexibility waned I stepped up to (if that's the correct wording) a Jimmy's Thunderbox which I find quite good (provided one doesn't make the hole too wide) but in some places these days digging a hole to dispose of this sort of business is not considered appropriate and I'm now considering purchasing a porta pottie but would appreciate the thoughts of those travellers who have already made this transition. Fellow Campers Shortly we are heading to Tassie on the new spirit to explore and free camp. Having just bought a couple of bottles of the usual blue stuff. I have heard of other alternative substances you can use to break down and remove the offensive odours etc. If any one knows any other natural effective toilet clearners, could you please give me a heads up with the ingredience etc and effectiveness. Hi all Have been using a porta potty in the camp trailer, which we would empty every third day usually, using the nappy San in it, works a treat! But now we are thinking about moving to a pop top, the likes of a Coromal or goldstream type of thing, maybe in the next year or so, finances permitting!! I've seen the ensuite type vans, sort of semi off road, but was wondering, with the size of the cassette for the toilets, is it still ok using the nappy San, and how long would you leave it to empty it.. Seem to be much larger capacity? Just wondering... Thoughts please, or experience with these... Thanks Odog

I have a Camprite portapotti which is a no name brand of some of the brand names. It has a 10litre top tank and a 20litre bottom tank and with the exception of the bottom tank wanting to get a bit feral when travelling on hot days (wants to blow up like a balloon) generally it works fine (just need to get someone else to empty the tank). My issue is the travelling with the top tank full of water - on rough roads it leaks out the spray nozzle filling the bowl with up to a litre of water where it then sloshes around spilling out - thank fully the bottom tank is fine. With the top tank off the bottom tank and half full of water I shook it around and lots of water came out the the flushing nozzle as there does not seem to be any mechanism to prevent this happening. I am after suggested solutions please. I could empty the tank each time before travelling but that is wasteful on water. I could empty the tank contents before travelling into a 10 litre plastic jerry but that means carrying an other unnecessary item. Other ideas - thanks Garry

Finally got to do a proper test on a new Loo on our recent desert trip. Our remote area trips usually have nothing but a spade but its becoming time for the next step up and the older girls have some difficulty in squatting in the bush. Just having a seat is a big help , however in the past we have seen many toilet versions in use , none of which is completely right. This one also has its issues , but like all products it has to be considered in light of your own requirements. This product has provide ideal for quick stops by the roadside when something needs to be set up and put away quickly, and in this mode is usually used for a quick wee straight onto the sand. Unlike some other quick chairs it has a wider more stable footprint with bigger feet and has proved to be effective. In an overnight camp situation in is used normally with a bio-degradable plastic bag. The bag was used in 2 modes either with bottom cut out over a hole in ground , or as just a bag which is buried later. I think it worked better in the second mode. The top part of the seat is attached with velcro and comes off to fit the bags. I found it better to use masking tape to assist with holding the bag in place as they could become heavy. Its a little harder to use toilet paper with this seat because it does move a little, but ok with practise. The flap sits at the front of the seat reducing potential splash and also clips up and over the seat keeping flies etc out when not in use. The almost see thru plastic bags do however look a bit unsightly and I would like to find a soucre of dark bio-begradable plastic bags. Space in our car is limited when on the move so products have to work and this one does justify its place in the car. One has to overcome some mental reservations here , but with the flap over the hole it can even be used as a spare seat and on another day I even placed our jacking plate on it making a sort of second table ! To make things quicker we modified the chairs carry bag by removing the string widening the seam and attached velcro for a quick packup. Ours was around $25 from BCF.
