Edition 370: 23rd January 2015.

Hi ExplorOz Reader,

The Australia Day long weekend is almost upon us, so we're just in time with today's newsletter. Why not post some pics of how you celebrate Australia Day on our Facebook Page. Please remember that as Monday is a National Public Holiday, our office will be closed.

A Taste of the Canning

This week's Not-to-be-Missed-Blog, is called A Taste of the Canning. Prepared by Life Member Mick O, this blog contains a compilation of his own videos that show track conditions along the various sections of the CSR. If you've not yet travelled the undisputed best track in Australia, take a peek. You'll either be inspired or put off!

If you're planning a trip along the Canning Stock Route, refer to the Trek Note on ExplorOz to access everything you need.

Member Bonus: free download of route file + individually selected POI/Waypoints.

Roadhouse Toilets

The subject of pees, poos, and toilet paper always creates a bit of stink amongst campers. During the past week on the Forum, this post on Roadhouse Toilets has resulted in some well considered responses to an issue that faces us all. Do you pay to pee? If not, should you? Yes, that's really what people were talking about this week!

Pork Belly Camp Oven

Member - Brian P (SA) is at it again. His latest recipe to be added to the ExplorOz Recipe database is this mouth-watering Pork Belly with Apple and Mustard Sauce. Brian - we all want to come to your camp!

Don't forget there's just over a week to go until the competition closes for your chance to a pair of Sunwise Sunglasses. All you have to do is share a recipe to the Pork & Ham section during the month of January.

Road Alerts

Wet season conditions often bring flash flooding and situations can change dramatically in almost an instant. This week in the Kimberley, a police vehicle en-route to rescue a family near Glen Hill Station had to abandon their vehicle in the middle of the creek when it was washed away! Even 4WDs cannot river crossings can overpower a vehicle.

The summer heat has also resulted in 2 recent deaths, one in Wiluna and another in the Pilbara. Both deaths were the result of leaving their stranded vehicle (with water) to walk to get help (without sufficient water). Don't leave your water source - your life depends on it!

On ExplorOz, you can view current and historical data based on official road statuses issued by shires and main roads. These reports are compiled voluntarily by Life Member - Mike (SA). See Road Alerts

Free Camps

Everyone wants to know the location of free or low-cost places around the country where you can legally camp. But it's more than that - you want to know how good the camp is before you make plans to stop there.

ExplorOz members have access to this information free on our website. If you're planning ahead, simply browse or download any Place as a useable GPS file. Most camps listed on ExplorOz, have photos, descriptions, a list of facilities, reviews, and useful information which has been added by real travellers like you (which typically would indicate they are 4WD enthusiasts). Currently, ExplorOz has over 84,000 POIs in our Places database, of which 5684 are for camps.

If you are using a tablet or iPad with GPS and have internet service you use the website to look up Places near you. Perfect when the day hasn't gone to plan and you're desperate to find a place to stop.

If you're using EOTopo maps (Release 2015) you'll be able to access this data offline - simply refer to camp symbols on the map.  If you're using the maps with OziExplorer or on your HN7 or other sat nav device you can simply see what's around you at a glance. If you're using earlier versions you can do a look up in the Name Search file.

Changes at ExplorOz Shop

Regular site users might notice we've changed the category headings on our shop home page. We've made a major overhaul to the categories that products are placed in but everything else is the same. More info

Visitors & Members

What can you buy in life with $50? Does that give you 12 months of useful information, entertainment, and inspiration? Does ExplorOz do a good job in the 4WD, caravan and camping industry? Does ExplorOz make a difference to people? to regions? to tourism? to you?

If you use the site regularly we are seeking your support in buying a Membership subscription (or renewing it when it falls due). This will cost you $49.95 to join, which will last for a year. It is then just $29.95 to renew each following year provided you keep your subscription active. It's excellent value! To discover exactly what you get with Membership, please read our Personal Membership page here.

We are also aware that there are many potential Business Members amongst our registered Visitor subscribers. Did you know that you can join from as little as $150? Advertising options are varied to suit your needs. Contact Adele for more information by phone or email.

ExplorOz could not be successful without ongoing development and great attention to its' customers. This website is a full time job for both David & Michelle who own the site. We are regular Aussies just like you and we're just doing what we do best to make a living. We also employ Adele - who most of you already know is an exceptional person who delivers exemplary customer service. Your testimonials tell us we're doing a great job but we have payroll costs, insurance, taxes, warehouse services, phone and web infrastructure and whilst the majority of our site audience are non-members - we can't cover all our expenses!

We do need you - please join (or renew) here!
